The BaYangToys X22 Brushless Double-GPS Drone with Gimbal (hereinafter, probably just called the X22) is a large-sized (550mm square), fairly weighty (850g) drone that features GPS stabilisation and is able to fly with a GoPro or other similarly-sized action cam (although it already comes with a camera, the GoPro series of action cams may result in a higher-quality video).

It also sports a gimbal; simply meaning that your videos will be rock-stable even if the drone itself is rocking and rolling in the wind.

This isn't a flashlight, household lamp, Christmas light set, or other thing that glows, but it *DOES* have a number of LEDs on its fuselage (
this word is definitely *NOT* pronounced "fyoo SELL' uh jee" as Drake Parker from the TV program "Drake and Josh" would pronounce it; the word is pronounced "" , so what the hey

I love things that fly; that's why I took the bate and also why I added a seperate section titled "PRODUCTS DESIGNED TO FLY" on my website a number of years ago and created a new website just under a year ago specifically for flying machines of this nature!!! I was also attracted to something that this drone has that many others don't...


The X22 is in the lower-end of being hobby grade, rather than just being another run-of-the-mill pisson toy grade drone.
It's huge for one thing; and it sports BRUSHLESS motors that deliver incredible amounts of power and have a far longer useable lifetime than their brushed counterparts.

The TheRCSaylors Sticker that you see was applied by me; please don't expect your BaYangToys X22 to come equipped with one.

In the second photo above, you'll see that I swapped out the OEM landing sprigs with white ones.
This should help make the drone easier to see if it goes down.

It sports a 1080p camera with a 5.8GHz transmitter to furnish a live video feed to the app; both still photos and aerial video can be taken with it!
If you choose to use a memory chip besides the one that the drone is furnished wih and that is rated lower than Class 10, you *MAY* see skipped frames, "jitters", unwanted intermittent video artifacts, and similar horse puckey.


This toy is a bit more complicated to get it to take off than your average toy-grade drone...here's how to get it off the ground:

As with any rechargeable product, charge it first (see directly below), install 6 AA cells into the radio, assemble the drone (you need only install the landing sprigs, props, camera gimbal assembly, and the camera itself; and remember to insert the included 4GB MicroSD memory chip into the camera), install the flight battery, and then you can pretend to fly a dragonfly (well, that's what the kitty cats would think it was if it were designed to be flown in a small living room).



1: Turn the radio on using the black slide switch located directly in between the two joysticks; slide it up (toward the antenna).

2: Plug the drone's battery into the drone itself; just push it into the battery bay until it stops. Plug the two red banana plugs firmly together, stuff all of the wires into ther battery bay as well as you can, and swing the battery hatch closed until it latches with a clearly audible and tactile "CLICK".
Turn the drone upside-down so that its camera and landing sprigs face skyward. You will see a small circular receptacle and a small black slide switch on one side of the landing sprigs. Slide that to the "ON" position and place the drone rightside-up on the ground.

THIS IS THE OPPOSITE ORDER IN WHICH MOST OTHER DRONES AND QUADCOPTERS ARE POWERED UP!!!

3: At this point, you'll need to perform a geomagnetic calibration of the drone. Pull the left joystick down and to the left and push the right joystick up and to the right. Hold them that way for a couple of seconds while observing the drone. When the lights on it start rapidly strobing, you may release both joysticks.

Hold the drone in front of you by one of its pylons (arms) so that the camera faces the sky and start doing a large "figure 8" with it until the controller emits some beeping sounds.



Here's a brief video showing you this rather queer calibration procedure.

Now, place the drone on the ground. Pull the left joystick up and to the left and push the right joystick down and to the right. This is the accelerometer calibration. Hold the joysticks this way for several seconds until the lights on the drone change from fast flashing to steady-on.

4: When the drone's LEDs turn steady-on, you're ready to take off.

Pull both joysticks downward and inward to start the motors at idle speed. Now, push up on the left stick, and the drone should now blast off and possibly leave an expanding cloud of dust (if you launched in a dry, dusty area anyway).
Congratulations, you're now a pilot!!!

On the remote control, slide the "OFF/ON" switch near the center toward the bottom, slide the drone's slide switch to the "OFF" position, and unplug the drone's battery from the drone to neutralise them when you are finished.



The battery in the BaYangToys X22 Brushless Double-GPS Drone itself is rechargeable; however the batteries in the remote will need to be changed from time to time.

To do this, slide the battery door off, carry it to the top of the basement stairs, and kick it down those stairs into the basement crawling with thousands of hungry silverfish that have to piddle -- they'll think it's something yummy to eat and start chewing on it, but quickly find it unpalatable, so they all pass micturition on it...
O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Remove the six used AA cells from the compartment, and dispose of or recycle them as you see fit.

Insert six new AA cells into the compartment, orienting each cell so its flat-end (-) negative faces a spring for it in each chamber.

Finally, slide the battery door back on.
Aren't you glad you didn't kick that battery door down the stairs to all those hungry, hungry silverfish that really need to go poddy now?



To charge the battery in the BaYangToys X22 Brushless Double-GPS Drone, plug the larger charger cord into any standard (in north America anyway) 110 to 130 volts AC 60Hz household receptacle (or "wall outlet" or even "wall socket" if you prefer to be incorrect --
USE A EUROPEAN TO AMERICAN PLUG ADAPTER IF NECESSARY!
Some units ship with a European charger unit with two long rounded prongs on its plug; you may use this charger on 220-240 VAC 50Hz power but you may also use it with 110-130 VAC 60Hz with the plug adapter
), and plug the smaller cord into the balance charger. Plug the small white plug on the battery itself into the receptacle for it on the balance charger. Let it cook there until the red LED on the charger turns off.

Once that has occurred, you may safely unplug the battery from the charger and unplug the charger from the AC receptacle.

Fully charging the BaYangToys X22 Brushless Double-GPS Drone's battery should give you approx. 16 minutes of flying time --
though I have been getting seven to just under 10-minute flight times with no camera or gimbal and this is after 12 flights (12 charge/discharge cycles on the battery).

Current usage measures 124.90mA (shortly after startup) on my DMM's 200mA scale.
I am not able to measure current when the drone is actually operating because that would be just too dangerous.



This R/C drone is meant to be used as a toy in a large dry area outdoors, not as a flashlight meant to be carried around all the time, thrashed, trashed, bashed, and abused; so I won't throw it against the wall, stomp on it, viciously chuck it at one of those wall-mounted porcelain uranators to see if it becomes broken (the drone, not the uranator!), try to drown it in the {vulgar slang term for a fudge bunny}bowl or the cistern, run over it, swing it against the concrete floor of a patio, bash it open to check it for candiosity, fire it from the cannoñata (I guess I've been watching the TV program "Viva Piñata" too much again - candiosity is usually checked with a scanner-type device on a platform with a large readout, with a handheld wand that Langston Lickatoad uses, or with a pack-of-cards-sized device that Fergy Fudgehog uses; and the cannoñata is only used to shoot piñatas to piñata parties away from picturesque Piñata Island), send it to the Daystrom Institute for additional analyses, launch it into the upper atmosphere of Gamalon V* so that chairman Sonji gets all pissy about it, or inflict upon it punishments that I might inflict upon a flashlight.

The drone uses 2.4GHz RF radiation to communicate with its radio, and its camera uses 5.8GHz (802.11ac or just 5G) WiFi to relay its photographic data back to your smartphone or tablet.

The X22 can be flown strictly-dictly LOS (Line Of Sight) if you don't have a 5G tablet or smartphone (or like me, if the camera was fuxxored).

FPV distance is stated as 250-300M (820.21 to 984.25 feet) and controller distance is stated as 400-450M (1312.34 to 1476.38 feet).

Rotor (propeller) speed was measured at
1,348RPM at idle.
It is simply too dangerous for me to measure RPM values at hover and at maximum thrust, which is why these values aren't present.

Battery temperature was measured at 110.5° (43.6°C) shortly after landing a flight that I made on 04-24-20; I flew the drone until LVC kicked in.
Ambient temperature at flight time was 87°F (30.6°C).

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was purchased on Ebay on 04-06-2020 and was received at 3:08pm PDT on 04-14-20.

The camera on mine appears to be defective; the only file on my MicroSD memory chip after the maiden flight was titled, "FormatFlag" {no extension} and was 0 bytes in size.

I have an action cam that will fit in the gimbal, but I need to get some Velcro first...o wait, never mind -- I simply kyped the Velcro from the OEM camera and stuck it to my action cam.

As of the morning of 04-15-20, the gimbal itself appears to have gone to pot. It fails to initialise and emits a "hot" odour.
Since the drone still does fly though, I'll be issuing the, "" icon to it, indicating partial product failure but that it still flies.

I taped (and later Velcroed) my action cam directly to the underside of the drone's fuselage. Therefore, the camera angle is fixed and there is no shock absorption, so jello may be evident in the videos that I produce using this drone until or unless I obtain another gimbal ass'y.

UPDATE: 04-17-20
The gimbal no longer just emits a "hot" odour; I can now rather easily detect a "burning" smell from it!!!


UPDATE: 04-18-20
This drone is proving to be extremely sluggish in the air; the yaw rate (horizontal rotation) is only 4RPM at maximum speed rate.
So if you wanted a drone that could tun on a dime and leave change, this isn't it.

In light of this, the drone's rating has been significantly decreased; flying this drone feels like a chore rather than something fun to do.
It won't receive the dreadful, "Zero Remotes! Piddle On It!" rating because it still flies alright, but I just don't see it being rated much more highly than one R/C because this drone has more problems than the Pope caught in the girl's restroom.


UPDATE: 04-26-20
Despite this drone's low rating, it has surprisingly good punchout (throttle punch) for such a large and heavy quadcopter -- which is actually not that surprising because this drone has thouse powerful brushless motors and a 3S (3-cell) flight battery.


UPDATE: 09-11-20
This drone appears to be going down the tube; it fails to accept commands (stick movements) from its radio much like the flight that I made on 09-09-20; I installed six brand spanken new AA cells before the last flight *AND* I power-cycled the radio but that wasn't "it". :-(
The drone is very sluggish to respond to the initialisation commands and when I do finally get it in the air, it virtually ignores commands from the radio except for throttle.

I'll give it a few more chances before issuing that dreadful, "Failed or was destroyed during/after testing" icon though.


UPDATE: 09-12-20
Drone has failed; it would appear that the radio receiver circuit in the drone has partially burned out or the antenna is no longer connected. Since I am neither capable nor qualified to effect this type of repair, the drone is now officially grounded. :-(

Therefore, the dreadful, "Failed or was destroyed during/after testing" icon will have to be issued immediately to denote that the drone has gone to pot and is therefore no longer flyable.
