1W LUXEON DESK LAMP

1W Luxeon LED Desk Lamp, retail $32.50 (www.amondotech.com...)

I received 18 products from Amondotech late this morning; thought I'd start with what I consider the most useful one (to me, anyway) first.

This is a nice looking gooseneck-style desk lamp that uses a 1 watt white Luxeon LED as its light source. It casts a pure white light on your work surface, not a yellow color you might expect out of an incandescent desk lamp.

 SIZE

To use the desk lamp, remove it and its AC adapter from the box. Remove the twist tie from the AC adapter's cord. Plug the plug on the end of the AC adapter's cord into the receptacle for it on the lamp base. Plug the transformer into any standard 2- or 3-prong household AC receptacle.

To turn the lamp on and off, gently press the button on the top of the lamp base and then release it. This is a soft-touch switch; you need not press it hard or strike it.

The lamp's head can be aimed in pretty much any direction you see fit, using the flexible gooseneck.

This product is powered by a 110-130 volts AC wall-wart transformer and does not use batteries, so this portion of the web page will not be needed.

The adapter is rated to output 7.5 volts DC at 400mA.
Center of plug is (+) positive, outer barrel is (-) negative.

This is a desk lamp meant to be used as a household lamp in a dry area, not as a flashlight meant to be carried around, thrashed, and abused, so I won't try to drown it in the toilet, bash it against a steel rod or against the corner of a concrete stair, let my housemate's kitty cat go to the bathroom on it, run over it with a 400lb Rascal, or perform other indecencies on it that a regular flashlight might have to go through. So this section of the web page will be significantly more bare than this section of the web page on a page about a flashlight.

The base is heavily weighted, so the unit will not tip over on its own. In fact, you would have to make a very concerted effort to topple it. There are four rubber feet on the underside of the base, so it will not tip over OR slide.

Photograph of a very dark grey computer keyboard illuminated by this lamp.
Intensity measurements are really not appropriate here, but I took one anyway.
Measures 6,180mcd on a Meterman LM631 light meter.

Those red reflections on the keyboard and the top of the lamp are from a set of Christmas lights.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit of this lamp and 17 other products were sent by A.L. of Amondotech and were received late in the morning of 07-11-05.

Product was made in China. A product's country of origin really does matter to some people, which is why I published it on this web page.

UPDATE: 07-11-05
The AC adapter runs on the warm side, measured at 139°F (59.4°C) after approximately one hour of operation. In my opinion, this is a bit warmer than I'd like to see, but it's certainly not hot enough to burn you or set anything on fire.

UPDATE: 07-16-05
The desk lamp was accidentally pulled off the desk and fell approximately two and a half feet to the floor as I rushed to answer a jangling telephone, and was not damaged and did not malfunction.

I don't intentionally abuse lamps like this, but if there's an accident (or a "boo-boo"), I'll report it on this website.

I measured the temperature of the top (bulb portion) of the lamp at 101°F (38.3°C) after several hours of continuous operation.

UPDATE: 08-14-05
I have taken note that whenever the lamp is unplugged, it will turn itself on when it is plugged back in. I realise that this is a very minor thing, but if I happen to see or notice something, I take note of "very minor things" here at The LED Museum.

UPDATE: 09-20-05
I have decided to rate this product 4 1/2 stars and place it in The Trophy Case on this website.

PROS:
Decent brightness without being too bright
Easy-to-use on/off switch
Durable construction

CONS:
Wall-wart seems to operate a bit on the warm side - 139°F (59.4°C)
This is what prevented it from being rated a five star product.
